The Canada-based international education leader welcomes the federal government’s newly announced changes to the International Student Program (ISP) to strengthen the integrity of international education, including moves to strengthen document verification and deter bad players in the sector.
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CA – M Square Media (MSM), a global education and edtech company headquartered in Canada, welcomes the federal government’s newly announced changes to the International Student Program (ISP) to strengthen the integrity of its international education sector, mainly protecting prospective international students from scams and fraudulent practices.
The reforms, announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller at an October 27 press conference, include requiring Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) to confirm the letter of acceptance (LOA) directly with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a new “recognized institution” framework set to benefit postsecondary institutions with high standards, and an assessment of the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Aligned with the document verification process now required by the Canadian government, MSM – through its edtech platform MSM Unify – reports the continued use and adoption of its AI-based software DocVerify, which can detect fraudulent documents generated or modified using manual interventions.
DocVerify employs advanced AI models to check against fraud and misrepresentation around bank statements, marksheets, English proficiency scores, and more. It meticulously scrutinizes each document, distinguishing genuine submissions from those altered or generated.
DocVerify has verified 55,000 documents as of August 2023.
“MSM welcomes the IRCC’s newly introduced measures to protect against document fraud, reinforcing our commitment to the highest standards of integrity, reliability, and security in the admissions process,” MSM CEO Raghwa Gopal said.
“At MSM and across our lines of business, our robust approach to compliance is reflected in our proprietary MSM Unify platform, which features a three-tier admission checkpoint system. Each document submitted by prospective students undergoes rigorous verification through these multiple layers, leveraging advanced algorithms,” Gopal added.
MSM provides student recruitment, global and in-country offices, education technology solutions, pathways, and public-private partnerships (PPPs) to the international education sector.
“Our global and in-country offices implement a strong agent verification process in place to ward off fraudulent practices. “Each agent has to undergo a rigorous agent evaluation system, which involves submitting required licenses and documents showing proof of business and references from higher education institutions (HEIs),” explained Gopal.
“MSM diligently conducts agent training sessions and team visits to partner agents in aid of robust support for and counselling of students. Simultaneously, we connect with prospective international students – such as through pre-departure sessions – to ensure that they are properly guided in their journey toward their dream college or university.”
With presence in over 20 countries, MSM has assisted more than 186,000 students worldwide since its inception in 2012.
