Student Visa Day: Celebrating US-India Higher Education Ties in Hyderabad

The United States Mission in India celebrated its sixth annual Student Visa Day. Consular Officers in the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, the US Embassy in New Delhi, and Consulates General in Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai conducted interviews with over 2,500 Indian student visa applicants. Student Visa Day honors higher education ties with that of the United States and India.

US Plans Record Visas for Indian Students This Year

According to the US Chargé d’Affaires Patricia Lacina, the United States is looking forward to another record-breaking year as they hoped to surpass their previous record of 62,000 issuance of visas to Indian students. This statement was in light of the Student Visa Day, which celebrates the higher education links between the United States and India.

The Future of Research: Less Than 2 Percent of World Has PhD; India Ranks 4th in Doctoral Graduates Produced

As per Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), less than 2 percent of the world’s population has a doctorate degree today. The report titled ‘Enhancing labor market relevance and outcomes of doctoral education’ says that “Doctorate holders represent 1.1 percent of 25-64 year-olds on average across OECD countries, though this varies from 0.1 percent or less in Indonesia and Mexico to more than 3 percent in Slovenia and Switzerland.” This has been corroborated by the US Census Bureau, which adds that, while Slovenia and Switzerland have the highest percentage of the population with a doctorate — at 5 percent and 3 percent, respectively — only 1.2 percent of the US population has a PhD.

Canada: Quebec Shuts Down Immigration Pathway for Graduates of Unsubsidized Private Colleges

Quebec’s Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Solidarity and the federal ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a new limitation on eligibility for post-graduation work permits. Under this new provision, only graduates of publicly subsidized institutions, including universities as well as both public and private colleges, will be able to get a work permit. This means, in effect, that graduates of unsubsidized private colleges will no longer be eligible to work in Canada after their studies. The new measure comes into effect on 1 September 2023.

UK Delegation in India Discussing Prospects in Transnational Education

The British Council, the UK’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities, is hosting a delegation of senior UK university leaders to India. The delegation will meet Indian central and state government officials, policymakers, and senior university leaders from 10 Indian states, in the national capital, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Kolkata to discuss partnerships and collaborations that meet the NEP’s vision of internationalization of Indian higher education institutions via promoting transnational education (TNE) and greater two-way student and faculty mobility.

UK’s Focus on Attracting International Talent

The United Kingdom introducing the “high potential individual” (HPI) route is a move toward the purpose of enticing skilled professionals and international students to the sovereign country. The scheme opens paths into the country, specifically being eligible for a work visa application. The length of the visa depends on the earned degree; a bachelor’s or master’s degree equals a two-year visa, and a Ph.D. degree equals a three-year visa.

Reports Over Student Accommodation a Concern – Harris

The Minister for Further and Higher Education has said the “full rigors of the law” should be exercised to protect the tenancy rights of international students. Minister Simon Harris said he will make contact with the representative group for international students to make sure students are fully aware of all legal protections. The minister added that he will be updating the next Cabinet Committee on Housing with a proposal he is working on, which would involve building more college owned accommodation in the future.

UGC Chairman Meets Deputy Australian High Commissioner To Discuss Higher-Education Collaboration

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar met Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Sarah Storey, along with her colleagues to deliberate on a partnership between Indian and Australian universities, as informed by officials. The officials added that both sides exchanged views to promote effective collaboration between India and Australia in light of education being recognized as one of the priority sections for cooperation by both Indian and Australian leadership.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins Jets Abroad to Woo International Students

New Zealand Minister of Education Chris Hipkins personally went to Denver, Colorado to represent and relay the message that New Zealand is open to welcoming international students back to the country. The Minister of Education hoped to make it known to education industry members gathered at the NAFSA 2022 conference by the Association of International Educators that the international border will be reopened on July 31, 2022.

Italian Ministry Encourages Foreign Students To Avail Scholarship Program

Indian students who wish to pursue their higher education in Italy are being offered a grant for the academic year 2022-23 by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The applications for this grant are open for the students on the official website: studyinitaly.esteri.it. The deadline for this grant is on June 9, at 2 pm (Central European Time).

UK Universities Call for Collaborations With India To Enhance Student Mobility

The British Council, in collaboration with Universities UK International (UUKi), Department for International Trade (DIT) and Department for Education (DfE), coordinated a series of workshops and meetings to enhance higher educational partnerships between India and the UK. As part of the India-UK Education Collaboration Workshop, university participants from both countries and sector body representatives explored topics such as levers for India’s inward mobility, platforms of collaboration and Industry-academia linkage, reporting their findings to the British High Commissioner in Delhi and high-level representatives from the Indian Ministry of Education.
