As Canada announces relaxed rules for international students, some countries are already reporting an increase in visa approvals and foreign student arrivals. Indeed, all signs point to an exciting 2023 for international education as foreign students continue their much-awaited return to their study destinations. Let’s all hope that this trend holds.
A report stated that a total of 77,799 Indian students received F-1 visas from January to July this year, while in China, 46,145 got the visa. While the number of Chinese students going to the U.S. for higher studies has declined since the start of the pandemic, China still accounts for the highest number of international students studying in the U.S.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently announced a relaxation of rules for international students so they can continue studies from abroad as they wait for their visas to be confirmed. International students were allowed to study online from outside Canada at the height of the pandemic and remain eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). These distance learning measures have been extended until August 31, 2023.
According to a statement issued by the Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation, about 66 Russian students have received Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarships within the Erasmus+ Program to continue their studies at European Union universities this year.
A report showed that Egypt is among the top 20 countries globally with the highest number of students studying in Germany from 2020 to 2021. Official data from UNESCO also showed that 3,993 Egyptians studied at German universities in the 2019/20 academic year.
The year 2023 is shaping to be a huge year for international education in Australia. The demand for international education in Australia is high, with the country receiving 34 percent more inquiries in July, with visa applications from Nepal doubling compared to 2019 numbers. Early indicators reveal that 2023 could be a blockbuster year.
International students from Malaysia who went to New Zealand have been taking their learned skills and talents back home according to the High Commissioner to Malaysia. An example was Tan Sri Doctor Mazlan Othman, the first Malaysian woman to gain a Ph.D. at Otago University, who returned home to become Malaysia’s first astrophysicist.
Immigration statistics in the U.K. as of June 2022 show that there were 486,868 sponsored study visas granted to international students, 71 percent more than 2019’s 202,147. Of the hundreds of thousands of visas awarded, Nigerian nationals had 65,929, ranking third on the list. Nigerian nationals also recorded 6,915 out of the 722,962 non-immigrant visas issued by the United States in June.
In Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada, immigrants and business partners Ankit Wadhwa and Monika Sharma built a marketing start-up known as Cape Breton Influencers to help ease the transition of international students and help them establish a sense of belonging. These two friends use flash mobs and bhangra dance lessons to help newcomers connect to locals.
About 115,000 international students have returned to Japan for the first time in two years as pandemic-related restrictions on the entry of foreigners began to relax in March. Universities and institutions have also been making their lectures more oriented towards international students.
The Ministry of Education and Training reported that more than 45,000 international students across the globe studied in 155 educational institutions across Vietnam from 2016 to 2021. Currently, some 20,000 international students are in Vietnam for graduate and post-graduate studies.
The Japanese government is set to revamp its international education strategy to restore the number of international students in the country. Sources said that the Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology Ministry intends to set up a panel of experts to review priority academic areas and source countries from which to draw students.
Almost 7,000 international students have arrived in Taiwan since February after the Ministry of Education (MOE) started granting international students enrolled in Taiwan’s academic institutions visas to study there. A total of 6,916 international students enrolled at university level or lower have been granted visas since July 19.

The minimum requirement for this program is 120 credit hours. International students are required to meet the university’s English language requirements, the international admission requirements by country, or the admission with a General Certificate of Education.
