After two years of high rejections, Canada is starting to see a marked increase in its student visa success rate. This is good news for international students aspiring to study there. In Australia, however, the government will start limiting foreign students’ working hours, to find the right balance between work and study. Let’s see how everything pans out.
The success rate for Canadian student visas has increased after two years with a high rejection rate. With a student visa rejection rate of around 35% in 2019 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rejection rate went up to 60% in 2022. But now, the success rate has started improving, although still quite slowly.
Nigerian students and their dependents contributed an estimated £1.93 billion to the United Kingdom (UK) in 2021, a new report by SBM Intelligence shows. This contribution is a net addition to the UK economy, says Ikemesit Effiong, head of research at SBM Intelligence, an Africa-focused geopolitical research and strategic communications firm.
A federal government pilot program that removes a restriction on the number of hours that international students can work could have a huge positive impact on the City of London as well as the city’s post-secondary international students. Analysts claim the change was sparked by an aging workforce and the epidemic, leaving employers unable to fill positions.
The soaring dollar and rising costs hurt Vietnamese students studying in the United States. The Vietnamese currency, the dong, has dropped 7.25 percent since the beginning of the year. This has prompted students to cut back on their expenses and take up side hustles to make ends meet.
Restrictions will soon be implemented on the number of hours immigrant students are allowed to work, with the right to work unrestricted hours for visa holders ending on 30 June 2023. The government said in a statement that the number of hours will be revised to find the right balance between work and study.

British high commissioner to India Alex Ellis stated that the United Kingdom is getting back to the standard visa processing of 15 days. The return of the process is in response to the ongoing influx of visa applications wherein 118,000 Indian students were granted a student visa, an increase of 89% from the year before.
QS Quacquarelli Symonds has released their “QS World University Rankings 2023” and a total of 14 higher education institutions from Australia made it to the top 200. Out of the 14 that made the rankings, eight have climbed up from their previous rank.
The United States government issued a student visa to a North Korean national this September for the first time in seven years. A total of 22 North Korean nationals obtained nonimmigrant visas during the 2022 fiscal year and one of the recipients received an F-1 student visa. It has been seven years since the last awarding of a visa to North Koreans.

Consul General Orontes Castro noted the increasing number of Filipino international students in Canada. He shared the agreements that are being formed between the Philippines and some Canadian colleges and universities. With nearly one million vacant positions in Canada as reported in Q2 by Statistics Canada, international students are seen to play a big role in easing the labor shortage.
The US embassy in Ghana has said that the wait time for non-immigrant visa appointments has been reduced. Applicants will now have to wait less than six months for visa appointments. The US ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer said that the embassy has processed 70% more student visas compared to the embassy’s previous record.
