Canada Strengthens Strategy To Promote Immigration; the UK Now Allows Students To Obtain Job Offers

Iowa State’s International Students and Scholars Office director shared that an Iowa State University program that helps international students connect socially is returning this spring. Through a combination of office-sponsored events and social gatherings, the cultural ambassador program will match international undergraduate, graduate, and scholar students with domestic American students to build connections.

Canada recently unveiled its Indo-Pacific Strategy to promote future Canadian immigration through the Indo-Pacific region. Sean Fraser, Canada’s minister of immigration, announced that a $74.6-million investment over five years and a $15.7-million ongoing commitment will bolster the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its capacity for processing immigration applications both domestically and abroad in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Home Office of the United Kingdom has given consent for interested students to obtain a job offer from a company and apply for the skilled worker visa right away. The UK skilled worker visa is a long-term work permit that may be obtained for up to five years. Through this type of visa, employers are permitted to hire non-UK residents in certain qualified and specialized positions.

International students in France contribute nearly €5 billion to the French economy, according to a survey of Campus France and Kantar Public institute involving about 10,000 international students studying in France over the past three years. Statistics show that international students in France spend €867 monthly, 48 percent on rent and 21 percent to cover daily expenses such as food or clothes. The report also states that students pay €2,822 in tuition fees.

Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Elizabeth Jones has said there is another surge underway to do interviews for all the students going to the U.S. for the winter term. During the summer term, the U.S. Mission in India had issued 82,000 student visas in a “very aggressive surge.”

International students’ sustained interest in studying for an MBA program in the United States has helped stave off disaster at one school after another as a strong US economy has dramatically decreased the number of domestic applications. For the past two significant years in graduate business education, students have proven to be the MBS programs’ lifeblood at US business schools.

The British High Commission revealed that it has granted 127,000 student visas to Indians between 2021 and 2022, a rise of 273 percent over the same 2018 to 2019 period. This remarkable increase is due to the high demand for the UK Graduate visa and the backlog of applications resulting from the pandemic.

Erol Özvar, the Council of Higher Education  (YÖK) president, announced that there are over 300,000 international students from 198 countries in Türkiye, noting that the country is currently hosting 2.9% of the international students worldwide. Türkiye has now turned into a center of attraction for foreign students and initiatives to increase global alliances through employment, travel, education, and internship opportunities will be revived to increase further the diversity of researchers and students.

Three Canadian colleges were named among the top 100 universities in the world. The international student population, global research reputations, publication quality, and number of research centers are some of these universities’ strongest points. Also included in the list of the top 2,000 universities in the world were 15 other Canadian educational institutions.

India’s academic regulator, the University Grants Commission (UGC), is encouraging Indian institutions to collaborate with foreign universities to offer joint and dual degrees, as well as twinning programs, rules for which were announced in May. The initiative aims to widen Indian students’ access to quality international higher education and raise the standards of India’s academic institutions.

A bilateral partnership with the United Kingdom promises to let Indonesian students obtain foreign degrees without leaving the country. Represented by its international education champion Steve Smith, the UK government said the venture was aimed at bumping up student numbers going into both countries reciprocally. 

College officers and immigration specialists observe a rising pattern of mainland Chinese college students and younger staff shifting to Hong Kong. Academics and college students stated that the pattern was pushed by pessimism concerning the prospects provided by a mainland within the grip of robust zero-Covid insurance policies.
