International students are starting to swell in number in many major study destinations. Not only are they beginning to make a difference in overall enrollment figures, they are also contributing substantially to the countries’ economies. Let’s hope that these trends hold so we can all go back to some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy in the international education sector soon.
India has surpassed China as the leading country of origin for international students in the United States. According to the U.S. State Department, the U.S. issued roughly 100,000 F-1 visas to Indian nationals between October and July of this year. The roughly 60% jump was partly due to a rebound from a year earlier when many countries restricted travel from India due to a wave of coronavirus infections there.
The Association of Atlantic Universities in Canada claims that the rising enrollment at several universities in the area is being driven by overseas students. According to a recent report from the association, there are now almost 3,000 more full-time international students among its members than there were last year, an increase of 15.5%.
Despite reports that the government aims to limit the number of international students who can remain in the country after completing their studies, data reveals that international students contribute $25.9 billion to the UK’s economy. As the government evaluates immigration regulations, Suella Braverman, the home secretary, is anticipated to consider measures to restrict the number of dependents who can travel to Britain with international students.
There were 184,200 international students in Germany from 2006 to 2011, according to Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office. The international students were in the country with a residence permit for studies, and eventually, 48 percent of those 184,200 stayed in Germany upon graduation and sought employment opportunities in the country.
After two years of closed borders, Australia has granted more than 150,000 student visas so far in 2022. The influx of international students is great news for the international education sector in the country, as Australia hopes to hit pre-pandemic levels of international education numbers soon.
International students from New Zealand can now apply for a Canada visa through the Internet, thanks to a special visa application service called “Canada Visa Online.” The service simply requires applicants to fill out and submit an online form which will be received by the Canadian consulate.
The Universities UK (UUK) sent a letter to Secretary of State for the Home Department Suella Braverman after the latter’s statement that the number of international students in the UK should be reduced. The leaders of UUK pointed out that such a statement is unhelpful and counterproductive. They added that it conveys a message that the UK is an unwelcoming and hostile environment for international students.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has admitted the flaws in a response to a House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration report. The IRCC is actively working to ensure racial equity for employees, clients, and Canadians.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore opened the doors to Sydney Town Hall for the first International Student Welcome since the start of the pandemic. The Lord Mayor expressed delight in welcoming the hundreds of international students back after the COVID pandemic interrupted the lives of so many young people.
As many as 83 percent of students report cost as the most significant barrier to studying abroad, in a social impact report by a fintech firm. On the other hand, the survey also showed that 91 percent of students state that the availability of an educational loan is instrumental to their ability to study abroad.
International students are increasingly flocking to countries like Portugal in Western Europe. Portugal offers thousands of courses through its 50 universities and 84 polytechnics, both public and private. The country is known for its high quality of student life.
Students reported that they were unable to work internships required for graduation, as their visas allow them to work only on campus even though many in-person opportunities on campus were eliminated due to pandemic concerns. Delays in graduation meant that students had to extend their visas, a complicated and time-consuming process.

This program is currently registered for accreditation with Accreditation Canada/Equal.
