The increase in college applications is caused by several factors which are driven by the early pandemic. The US remains the top destination of Indian international students, while Spain allows global learners to stay after their graduation.
The number of submitted applications rose by 21.3% between 2019-2020 and 2021-2022, according to a March 2022 Common Application report, which included data from 853 member schools. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the rise in applications is attributed to several factors, including individual students applying to more schools, intentional recruitment efforts by the universities and the implementation of test-optional or test-blind policies, partly driven by the early pandemic during which some students were unable to take tests.
The government of Canada is working hard to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals as quickly and safely as possible. Around 3,000 Ukrainian students and researchers have probed into the possibility of going to Ireland for the next academic year. The students and researchers have their reasons, but those that stand out are accessing full-time courses in Ireland, part-time study, and maybe a peaceful area to continue their studies or work online with their Ukrainian institutions. Further and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris stated that Ukrainian students occupying places in Ireland will be treated as if they were on the Erasmus+ study abroad program. Meaning, they are seen as locals and will not be liable for international fees plus access to financial support.
International students coming to Australia are not catching up to their pre-pandemic levels. The Department of Education, Skills, and Employment (DESE) said that there were 440,129 international students enrolled in the first quarter of 2022, a decrease of 15 percent compared with the first quarter of 2021. The reason—as per Ravi Lochan Singh, the president of the Association of Australian Education Representatives in India (AAERI)—is that the first intake of 2022 was composed of students who had visas, were studying online, and were not able to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions. More incoming international students are expected to arrive in the coming months as the country’s visa processing time is foreseen to increase greatly, and some students have to wait for three months for a student visa.

Malaysia is close to hitting its 250,000 international student enrollments target by the year 2025.
