As study destinations continue their efforts to attract more international students, some European countries are training their sights on Indian students, considering the sheer number of young Indians who want to pursue studies overseas. In the U.S., Community Colleges are attracting international students who see the benefits of 2+2 programs. Indeed, the international education sector seems to be alive and well, despite the diverse challenges.
US community colleges are becoming more and more popular with international students, with more than 60,000 enrollees in the 2020-2021 school year. There are several reasons why Indian students are becoming more attracted to American education, among them are the “2+2 programs” that allow students to earn a bachelor’s degree after two years of studying in a community college and two more years of university study.
The Norwegian government revealed its plans to enact tuition fees for some international students attending universities in its proposed state budget for next year. Since international students are currently exempt from paying tuition in Norway, the idea is largely regarded as a 180-degree change in the government’s approach to education.
France intends to host and educate 500,000 international students by 2025, according to Jean-Noel Barrot, minister for digital transition and telecommunications. Barrot states that France welcomes bright scientists and creative thinkers from all over the world to its system of higher education and research to meet its goal of educating half a million international students by said year.
In Italy’s, France’s, and Germany’s proactive efforts to attract more foreign students, Indian students who aspire to study abroad may find more options for affordable international study destinations. These countries in Western Europe have a great potential of becoming favorite international education destinations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, especially at a time when these countries are experiencing increasing tuition costs, accommodation crises, and visa backlogs.
College and university officials in New Zealand are doubling their efforts in working with international student recruitment agents as the country continues to experience challenges in increasing foreign student enrolment. Among the challenges faced by higher education institutions are shortages in staff members that were let go due to the pandemic-enforced budget crisis.
According to experts, Indian students should opt for majors that would prepare them for careers at companies that are free from the H-1B threshold lottery. Numerous employment openings exist in many of the most technologically advanced hospitals, including those for IT specialists, biostatisticians, and even various types of engineers in addition to positions for physicians and nurses.
According to a study done among international students in New Brunswick, Canada, only 37% of surveyed global learners work in their chosen fields. The report also revealed that 80% of international students have post-secondary education before arriving in the province while 51% of the 200 surveyed international students had at least five years of work experience before moving to Canada.
Over 25,000 international students are enrolled in Georgia universities in the school year 2021-2022, creating more than 8,200 jobs across the state. A NAFSA calculation shows that for every three university students in Georgia, one job is created through their expenditure on tuition fees, dining, accommodation, retail, and transportation, among other things.
A report showed that there was a 4.4-percent increase in the number of Turkish students in the United States over the past year, the highest increase in 10 years. The report also noted that more than 8,400 Turkish students were enrolled at US higher education institutions in the school year 2021-2022, from 8,109 in the previous year.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is encouraging more academic collaborations between Indian and international education institutions, said Marvin Krislov, president of the US-based Pace University. Krivlov revealed that under the NEP 2020, India is opening its doors for more global engagements, asserting that India is emerging as a major global player in the education sector.
Turkey is largely regarded as one of the perfect study-abroad choices for international students. Although in recent years most European countries have increased their cost of education, Turkey’s highly subsidized higher education has not been affected. Of the many universities in the country, 27 are ranked among the top 1000 institutions in the world.
MPs from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy Volkspartij Voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) have called on education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf to do more to limit the number of international students coming to the Netherlands. This will be done either by imposing limits on the number of students who can sign up or limits on the number of non-Dutch courses in subjects such as psychology, management, and politics.
