As international education continues to slowly move on from the global health crisis, we see governments and education institutions concerning themselves now with how to increase international student enrollment. Although the world has not completely eradicated the pandemic yet, students are already bent on starting or resuming their long-delayed study-abroad journey.
A recent survey shows recruitment agents worldwide, including in India, have a strong interest in UK, US, Australian and Canadian universities, with quality of education and employment prospects proving to be key drivers. Some 93 percent of the respondents responded they anticipate students to be in the United Kingdom, 91 percent in the United States, 87 percent in Canada, and 71 percent in Australia.
The IRCC has approved a new language test for those applying for immigration under the economic class, including international graduates. By early to mid-2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) expects to have the test in place.
The home office decided to abolish the Police Registration Scheme on August 4. UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) Chief Executive Anne Marie Graham said that the abolition of the said requirement will have an immediate benefit to international students in the UK.
According to published data on the number of international students, France welcomed 365,000 international students in the 2020/2021 academic year. The number of international students going to France has been climbing by over 70 percent in the last 20 years but decreased in 2019 and 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ireland has become a popular study destination choice among international students from India. It has seen an increase of around 10 percent per year in Indian international student applicants. In 2021, approximately 5,000 students from India went to Ireland for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
New Zealand Immigration Minister Michael Wood said that the return of international students may provide another source of short-term staff. He is confident that as they reopen to the world and the rebalance builds in, the tourism industry will go from strength to strength.
Germany is offering free education to Bangladeshi international students. The German government wants foreign students to pursue their higher studies with full diligence. The steps to applying for Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees are more or less the same process to all German universities.
The AFS Intercultural Programs launched a virtual exchange program that provides refugees and young women worldwide access to global education in sustainability, STEM, and positive social impact. The said program received 1,083 applications from 71 countries worldwide, including applicants from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Nigeria, and Syrian refugees in Turkey.
After the United Kingdom officially left the European Union (EU), the number of EU students applying to study in Irish universities increased substantially. According to the report, the number surged from 1,934 in 2017 to 6,383 student applications from EU countries in 2022.
International students, who were exiled due to the war in Ukraine, have until the end of August to apply for a regular residence permit in Germany. In Hamburg and Bremen, international students who left Ukraine can receive a six-month temporary permit, under which they are able to apply for university and start learning the German language.
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash proposed a six-week shift in the university year of New Zealand. The proposal aims to provide a student workforce for the horticultural and tourism sectors in the stretched months of February and March. International working holiday visa people and international students used to fill the gaps, but their numbers are yet to go back to pre-pandemic levels.
Several universities in Korea are now offering summer programs, inviting foreign students to briefly attend their schools during the summer or winter breaks and allowing them to receive college credits while experiencing the culture of Korea. All courses in summer school programs are held in English, except for Korean language classes.
